And Baking Powder.
There are actually books on cleaning with baking soda – like the ever popular Baking Soda: Over 500 Fabulous, Fun, and Frugal Uses You've Probably Never Thought Of
(the same author has a follow up expose on vinegar) or Baking Soda Bonanza! 2nd Edition. Used by itself, baking soda is slightly abrasive and works well scrubbing stains, and it acts like a natural deodorizer. It can be used to scrub surfaces in much the same way as commercial abrasive cleansers. Mixed with water, it creates a slightly alkaline liquid, which cuts through grease and dirt on almost any surface. For maximum cleaning power, mix baking soda or powder with white vinegar. Baking powder works just as well - it’s a mix of bicarbonate of soda and cream of tartar. Use baking soda or powder to:
- Polish and clean stainless steel: mix water and baking soda into a paste, rub on with a damp rag and rinse.
- Clean the bath tub or toilet: Scrub with a thick paste of vinegar and baking soda to cut through scum and grease.
- Freshen damp books: Sprinkle baking soda on damp books to save them. Flipping through the pages dusts off the powder. Don’t worry if it hits the rug or floor - on the rug it will eliminate odors when vacuumed, on the floor it will act as a natural scrubber when mopped up.
- Scrub tiles and grout: Use an old toothbrush and a thick paste of baking soda and water.
- Clean the sink: Use a half-cup of baking soda, a cup of vinegar and a cup of water. Wiping the inside of your sink with this mixture will leave a sparkling clean and will also freshen your drain as it’s rinsed.
- Polish silver: Recover lost shine with a mixture of baking soda, salt and water.
- Preserve your toothbrush. Add a little baking soda to the bottom of where you keep your toothbrush, if it’s in a cup or cover. This will prevent mold.
- Clean the oven: Sprinkle water on dirty or stained areas followed by a layer of baking soda. Rub tough spots gently with a fine steel wool pad. Wipe off scum with a sponge. Rinse well and wipe dry.
- Deodorize for the house: One of the best properties of baking soda is its ability to eliminate odors on almost anything - mattresses, carpets, upholstered furniture, and the guy sitting next to you. Go ahead, hit them all.
