What Is Prosperity?
Prosperity is the newest guide to women's personal finance - a positive resource to help women make finance and lifestyle decisions. The site is the brainchild of three women, and two (brave) men, who were frustrated with the lack of financial resources available to an audience that controls $3.3 trillion in domestic spending.
Reading Prosperity is like getting advice from your moxilicious best friend - the one who is as proud of her portfolio as she is of her designer wardrobe (bought at sample sales, of course) as well as her golf handicap and split-times (gotta keep up with the boys) - someone who is heart, mind and wallet healthy. It’s time for women to fully recognize the financial power they have and Prosperity is the place to help them take this lead.
Why Prosperity?
In 2006, two separate surveys by insurance companies found that women across several age and wealth brackets had little confidence in their ability to successfully and independently manage their finances. In one survey over 50 percent of respondents admitted that they were waiting for Prince Charming to help them figure it out.
For most of us, there is no white knight--let alone a money management savvy one with a fat bankroll and an enchanted checkbook. Lots of women are looking out from under the shade of the glass ceiling, rather than finding the perfect fitting glass slipper. There are more women than men in the United States; more women with advanced degrees; and very little information to guide us as we follow the many different paths open to us today.
This is wrong. So, we started thinking about solutions. Women have untapped power (imagine if we all stopped spending for a month), and we should be empowered to manage our money well, knowing we’re driving the economy.
That’s why Prosperity exists.
We’re going out and asking the questions we wish we’d had answers to before we entered the grownup world. How do you pick a 401(K)? How important is a financial planner? How do you start and maintain a career earning just $.76 for every dollar earned by a man, while planning for a secure financial future?
Of the five of us, three of us are married, two with children, and two of us are single. Three of us own homes, two of us rent. We know that women are not all on the same track, and yet we all need basic information and resources for a sound financial future. We also know that there are external costs attached to being a woman, costs that few of the traditional financial magazines address. There are pressures on women to look better than and out-perform the competition, whether in the office or on the social scene.
Whether you’re flying solo, married, or raising kids on your own, a little hand holding is not a bad thing. Prosperity is here to provide the modern woman with a savvy community centered on the financial resources you need but never had the time to develop.
